Amazon Prime Video’s multimillion-dollar Tomb Raider reboot has paused production after Lara Croft star Sophie Turner suffered an injury.
The Phoebe Waller-Bridge-helmed revival, based on the popular video game franchise, features the Game of Thrones actor as the action-heavy lead with the production reportedly costing £100million.
Filming for the highly-anticipated TV adaptation started in January, with the streaming service already providing a first look at the 30-year-old actor as the archaeologist turned adventurer.
In a statement, Amazon MGM Studio confirmed: ‘Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury.
As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover.
We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.’
It has not been revealed if the injury was received during filming or at another occasion.
This is a physically gruelling role with images captured from set in Surrey showing the Sansa Stark actor getting hands-on with the stunts, including one moment where she parachutes onto a beach.
An insider claimed to The Sun: ‘It’s been chaos on set and now the whole show is in jeopardy.
‘Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the gruelling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far.
‘Many on set fear Sophie may have to be replaced altogether now, as she may not bounce back in time.’
Posing the demands of the character may have ‘pushed her to the limit’, the source caveated that with the volume already filmed, any prospect of having to change the actor is ‘causing a real headache for producers.’
In January, the lead star opened up about the physical journey to prepare for this role, and the ‘perpetual back problem’ she discovered as a result.
‘It’s taken me months to get into good shape.
We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February of last year, of training.
Yeah, so it’s been a lot,’ she said on The Julia Cunningham Show.
She added: ‘I also realised that it’s much easier to kind of build muscle if you’ve worked out before in your life, which I never had.
So, it’s taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.’
Sophie is following the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alice Vikander as she takes on the role and is joined by a star-studded cast including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs and Celia Imrie.
In a statement after her casting was announced last September, she said: ‘She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.’
‘They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.
I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking,’ she concluded.
