The ASTI second level teachers' union is to ballot members on proposals related to the implementation of Senior Cycle reforms, and will be recommending that members accept the proposals.

The Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland said the decision followed negotiations between ASTI representatives and the Department of Education and Youth on additional supports for teachers and schools implementing the new Senior Cycle Redevelopment programme.

It said it had sought additional measures, including extra funding and resources for schools, training and other supports for teachers, including legal protection for teachers regarding Additional Assessment Components (AACs).

The ballot will take place over the coming weeks.

ASTI members had voted last June to reject the proposals aimed at enabling Leaving Cert reforms.

More than two thirds, 68% to 32%, voted to reject the document, Senior Cycle Redevelopment - Implementation Support Measures, and 67% voted in favour of industrial action to oppose the reforms.
