Barry Lenihan has been announced as RTÉ's new Political Correspondent.

Mr Lenihan joined the broadcaster in 2013 as an intern, before becoming a multi-media journalist in the RTÉ newsroom.

He joined RTÉ Radio 1 a year later and has reported on all major political stories for the station for the past decade, working as a key journalist in the coverage of elections and referenda.

He has presented RTÉ Radio 1 programmes, including This Week, Drivetime and The Late Debate.

Mr Lenihan created and co-presented the Know Your Constituency RTÉ podcast - a guide to all 43 constituencies in the 2024 General Election.

He also reported on significant events in British politics from Westminster, as well as broadcasting live from Rome for the election of Pope Leo XIV in 2025.

Mr Lenihan received a Headline Mental Health Media Award in 2022 for his reports on the Kerry CAMHS scandal and won 'News Reporter of the Year’ at the awards.

He holds a BA in Journalism from Dublin City University.

Mr Lenihan said: "I'm really looking forward to getting started and being part of the great team that is RTÉ's Political Unit, serving audiences across broadcast and digital media.

I know I'm following some great people who've held this role over the years, so it's a real honour to take on the position".

Mr Lenihan will start his new role later this month.
