An inexperienced Glenn varsity baseball team is off to a surprisingly good 4-1 start to their season after a 14-2 win Wednesday over visiting High Point Andrews.

The game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.

The Bobcats opened the season with a 31-15 win over Greensboro Smith and then defeated Oak Ridge Military Academy 14-13.

In arguably its best game of the young season, Glenn claimed a 6-5 win over Eastern Guilford on March 5.

The Bobcats had a game scheduled Monday, but it was canceled because of the tornado warnings and high winds.

As a result, Glenn did not play again until Tuesday, a 25-0 loss to Atkins.

Bobcats Head Coach Dustin Ijames stated that the long layoff, a lack of depth on the pitching staff and poor defense were the main reasons for the lopsided loss.

“Our numbers are low as far as turnout, and we don’t have a JV team this season.

We just don’t have the participation, and it is hurting us.

We are playing with some guys that have never played before.

We do not have a lot of pitchers, and we play four games this week because we had two games that were rescheduled.

I would never schedule four games in a week,” Ijames said.

“The spring break killed us.

We were in a good rhythm.

I didn’t even see the guys for 12 days during the break.

Going 12 days without a game is hard for anybody, but especially for players who had not played before.”
This year’s Glenn team has been a work in progress since August.

“We are playing some guys that are playing for the first time and they have gotten better since the fall.

We started in August.

I spent the entire fall teaching them just how to play a game because some of them had never played before.

They are getting better.

I have seen the progress they have made since August and it is a night-and-day difference.

In August we would not have been able to play a game, and now we can, so that is an achievement in itself.

We’ll continue to get better as the season goes on.

Right now what they need is a consistent routine.

That will really help them,” Ijames said.

Glenn had an away rematch against Atkins scheduled on Friday night and will play away against Salisbury today at 1 p.m.
