A teenage boy has been after a crash left a 45-year-old man dead in Barnsley.

South Yorkshire police made the arrests after the fatal smash between a pedestrian and a white Volkswagen on Friday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but the man died before he could be taken to hospital.

A 33-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday and were held in custody.

Police had already arrested two others on suspicion of murder, a 60-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman, on Friday evening.

The ambulance service first called the police after the crash on Rose Tree Avenue in Cudworth, a suburb north east of Barnsley.

The pedestrian’s family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, the force said.

DCI Simon Cartwright said: ‘Our investigation into this tragic incident in still in its early stages and our thoughts first and foremost are with the victim’s family, friends and loved ones.

‘Detectives are working hard to piece together the circumstances of what happened and we would urge anyone with information to please get in touch with us.

Police said they had lifted a cordon on the road by Saturday afternoon, but added that they still wanted people to come forward if they knew anything that could help with their enquiries.

A spokesperson added: ‘We are continuing to work at pace to understand the circumstances of this incident and are asking for anyone with information which could assist officers with their enquiries to come forward.’
