Did the Denver Broncos overpay for Jaylen Waddle?
In addition to trading their first-round pick (No.
30) overall to the Miami Dolphins, the Broncos also sent picks in the third (No.
94) and fourth (No.
130) rounds.
However, the Dolphins sent back a better fourth-round pick (No.
111) in addition to Waddle.
So Denver essentially traded first- and third-round picks for Waddle.
When you factor in pick values, it looks even better than that.
Using Rich Hill‘s trade pick value chart, the 30th overall pick is worth 196 points.
The 94th pick is worth 41 points and the 130th pick is worth 19 points.
That's 256 pick value points that Denver gave up in exchange for Waddle and the 111th pick, worth 29 points.
So that's 227 net pick value points that the Broncos traded for Waddle.
Hill's model has the 25th overall pick in the first round worth 230 points and the 26th overall pick worth 223 points.
So, based on those pick valuations, Denver essentially traded the equivalent of the 25th overall pick for Waddle.
For a receiver of his caliber, that could turn out to be a bargain for the Broncos.
