Donald Trump has unveiled the design for his 250ft ‘triumphal arch’ which could see taxpayer money used for its construction.
The US president revealed the plan for the ‘greatest and most beautiful’ arch, a gold-and-white-covered structure he wants to build in the capital to mark the United States’ 250th birthday.
It would tower over iconic Washington, D.C. landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and dwarf even the original Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Writing on Truth Social, where the 79-year-old has recently made most of his recent announcements instead of in front of cameras, he said: ‘I am pleased to announce that TODAY my Administration officially filed the presentation and plans to the highly respected Commission of Fine Arts for what will be the GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL Triumphal Arch, anywhere in the World.
‘This will be a wonderful addition to the Washington D.C.
area for all Americans to enjoy for many decades to come!’
The bold structure would have a golden inscription ‘One Nation Under God,’ with a Lady Liberty statue.
At the bottom, visitors would be greeted by four golden lions.
The plan is to build the towering monument in a roundabout near Arlington Cemetery, the largest burial ground in the US run by the military.
Trump’s vision has already run into obstacles after warning that it would tower over the cemetery and block pedestrians’ views.
However, it is said to be eyeing up $15 million (£11 million ) from the National Endowment for Humanities fund to use on the archway construction, NOTUS reports.
This suggests that taxpayer money will be spent on the project.
Trump also plans to attract private funding, according to the Washington Post, meaning the final price tag could exceed $15 million.
It comes after Trump’s £300 million megaproject for a golden ballroom on the White House grounds has been put on hold.
The Roosevelt-era East Wing of the White House was completely bulldozed to make way for the lavish ballroom, which matches the archway in decoration and design.
However, the construction now faces a legal challenge as it would be built on federal parkland.
Trump’s administration has hinted that the pause on the ballroom extension could put the president and his family in serious danger.
