The first trailer for the upcoming HBO Max Harry Potter series has arrived, with the new season set to come out this Christmas.

Following the filming of the series kicking off last summer, the first trailer now shows a glimpse of the adaptation of The Philosopher’s Stone, the first book by J.K.

Rowling.

Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton have been cast to play Harry, Ron and Hermione after over 32,000 actors were considered for the lead roles.

The trailer shows us inside the Dursley household as we see Harry’s difficult life under their thumb and the bullying he faces at school.

‘There is nothing special about you,’ Bel Powey’s Aunt Petunia cruelly declares.

We then see him receive his Hogwarts letter and introduction to Nick Frost’s Hagrid as the music grows more hopeful.

This is followed by a look at the fictional Wizarding School, as well as him playing Quidditch, where Hermione is cheering him on.

The trailer ends with Ron in the train carriage asking him: ‘Are you really Harry Potter?’ to which he gives a little nod as Ron shows his mind being blown.

In the trailer, the teachers Professor Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Professor Snape also make an appearance.

The official logline for the first season (of seven) reads: ‘There is nothing special about Harry Potter – at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says.

‘On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic.

But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past.’
Based on J.K.

Rowling’s best-selling novel series, the TV show was first announced in 2021.

Meanwhile, the main cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The trailer has garnered mixed response with some optimistic and enjoying the aesthetic, while others are worried it remains too similar to the original movie franchise.

‘This actually looks pretty good.

I genuinely think spending a full season’s worth of content on one book will flesh out the world of Hogwarts and its surrounding so much more,’Drbluejay wrote on X.

‘YOU GUYS, It looks INCREDIBLE!!!

Talk with me about this, people!!!!!

I’m going insane!!!!!’ Julie Johnson declared.

‘Wait, this actually looks pretty good.

I’m shocked,’ glindaupland echoed.

On the flip side, user Georgia Coley wrote: ‘Against all odds, I was fully unprepared for just how off-putting and uncomfortable this would be to watch.

‘Something about seeing such a classically-crafted, iconic film series translated into the aesthetics of a modern HBO prestige streamer show just feels uncanny valley wrong.’
‘HBO really excels at stripping the magic from the original books,’ Mimi reflected.

In the wake of Rowling’s recent comments about transgender people, many fans of the original films said they were planning on boycotting the new series as an act of protest, with many also slamming the actors who’d signed up.

These calls have also been reiterated with the release of the trailer.

Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu, who is set to play potions master Snape in the upcoming streaming adaptation, revealed last week how he’s faced death threats since being cast in the TV adaptation.
‘I’ve been told, “Quit or I’ll murder you”,’ he told The Sunday Times.

‘It really matters.

The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, “I’m going to come to your house and kill you”.

‘So, while I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be murdered…that could age badly!

But, yes, while I hope I’ll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.’
He added: ‘Many people put their lives on the line in their work.

I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter.

And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.’
Harry Potter is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Max this Christmas.
