The Easter egg bar has been set incredibly high, especially this year with creations like the Torres chocolate egg with salty crisps to the extra-thick pistachio egg from M&S.
Now it’s Hotel Chocolat’s turn with its £90 ‘everything’ ostrich egg, which I’ve put to the test.
Tipping the scales at more than 1kg, Hotel Chocolat’s chocolate ostrich egg is designed to impress.
Inspired by the world’s largest natural egg, the chocolatier has created a striking and delicious version.
The oversized shell is split into two flavours: one made from 40 per cent milk chocolate with crunchy cookie pieces and puffed rice, and the other a 50 per cent milk chocolate blended with crisp feuilletine.
Open the gold foil-wrapped shells up and the indulgence continues as there’s a selection of the brand’s best-known chocolates, from truffles to pralines, hidden inside.

As with all IndyBest’s reviews of Easter eggs this year, the criteria for an Easter egg that’s worth buying was high quality chocolate with good flavour, decent thickness, plastic-free packaging, and value for money.
Given the high price tag, the stakes for this egg was higher.

The egg is mammoth to hold and take in – at almost 30cm tall and 20cm wide.
Opening the white cacao paper packaging reveals a beautifully presented egg, wrapped in a thick gold foil that’s about the size of my head.
Despite the solid feel, the puffed rice chocolate is soft and silky smooth – with a varied texture and moreish flavour from the rice and cookies.
The other is a slightly darker chocolate that is richer and less easy-eating.
The wafer is subtle, but adds an elevated taste and texture.
The best bit?
The chocolates inside.
Hotel Chocolat has included its most popular chocolates, with two of each, so there’s no fighting over flavours.
I tried the dizzy praline chocolate and it was delectably rich and smooth.
For those avoiding dairy, there’s a vegan ostrich Easter egg , and for even more decadence, the patisserie ostrich Easter egg marries one brownie-inspired shell with a cookies-and-cream one.
Is the Hotel Chocolat 1kg everything ostrich Easter egg worth it?
When faced with a £90 price tag, the question of whether the Hotel Chocolat 1kg everything ostrich Easter egg is worth the spend is the most pertinent one.
The drama of the egg definitely warrants a luxury price point – plus the chocolate, as you might expect, is delicious, high-quality and thoughtfully designed.
While the chocolate shell is delicious, after so much of it, I can imagine it becoming same-y and, for me, the chocolates inside were the tastiest bit.
It certainly has impact if you’re looking for wow-factor this Easter but, overall, I’d prefer to stick to the brand’s chocolate boxes.
