When I want lightweight coverage, a healthy glow and a fluid formula I can apply with just my fingers, I reach for a skin tint.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a long-wearing full-coverage foundation, but a skin tint, packed with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid or squalane, is my favourite for a more natural, everyday finish.
Some have the added bonus of SPF, and while this shouldn’t replace your separate sunscreen, it’s always a good idea to get extra UV protection in your routine.
However, not all skin tints are created equally.
I want one that actually does something, not fades throughout the day and leaves me with no coverage at all.
As a beauty editor, I’ve tested well over 40 skin tints in my time, and have curated my top-performing favourites into one shoppable list.
From cult favourites like Ilia and Lisa Eldridge, to newcomers from Milk Makeup and Merit, there’s something for all skin types and budgets.
Whether you’re after a barely-there wash of coverage, a hydrating hit of skincare ingredients or simply something that won’t budge through a full day of meetings, there’s a skin tint on this list with your name on it.
These are my top picks.
The best skin tints for your makeup bag
Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Enhancing Tint
If you have combination skin like mine, this soft matte, natural finish of this beauty editor-beloved skin tint is worth the splurge.
It’s radiant but not dewy and provides enough coverage to even out my skin tone, including the redness on my cheeks and chin.
When I get a breakout, I use my concealer for pinpoint coverage.
It wears well, layers with other makeup products, and comes in the most beautiful pebble packaging.
Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Gel Tint
If you’re looking for staying power, Milk’s gel tint is where it’s at.
It adds a luminous glow to skin, and the gel texture is ideal for drier patches, without going cakey or cracking, the longer you wear it.
Products applied on top don’t disrupt it, and it feels comfortable, not heavy or greasy, on the skin.
My top tip is to apply it with a foundation brush rather than your fingers, as it can feel a little sticky on the first swipe.
Merit The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
This is a tinted, mineral SPF50 that provides the most beautiful sheer, buildable coverage with a natural, radiant finish.
It evens out my skin tone and leaves it looking healthy and glowy, without any stickiness or greasy finish.
Since I got my hands on it, I’ve used it almost every day since.
I like to apply it with a dense foundation brush and use concealer to pinpoint any blemishes.
Maybelline Super Stay up to 24H Skin Tint
This may have the fluid, lightweight texture of a skin tint, but it packs a punch when it comes to coverage.
It covers everything, from my breakouts and blackheads to the rosacea on my cheeks, and its longevity is very impressive.
Throughout a 16-hour day, it stayed in place and kept my skin looking fresh without that cakey feeling you can find with traditional foundations.
For less than £15, it’s a steal.
Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint
This is a fabulous alternative to a foundation, especially if you’re looking for something lighter and thinner in texture.
As the name suggests, it has a fluid serum texture but leaves skin looking its best.
It’s what I reach for when I want a natural finish, sheer but buildable coverage and a subtle glow all day long.
It never clings to any dry patches, either.
Ilia Beauty Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 30
Ilia’s serum skin tint is so fluid, it had a dropper applicator, and adds a dewiness that dry skin types will love.
It has an extensive shade range and a formula packed with skincare heroes like squalane, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, so it’ll always leave your skin looking better than before.
The watery texture also means it’s a breeze to apply with fingers and can be layered for a light-to-medium coverage.
