Top horse racing expert reveals picks for 2026 Kentucky Derby horses like Renegade, Commandment, Further Ado and The Puma
There is no sure thing for the 2026 Kentucky Derby.

Nearly half the field is within striking distance of the favorites.

As the Derby nears toward the May 2 showdown at Churchill Downs, Renegade is the 9-2 favorite in the latest Kentucky Derby 2026 odds.

But there are two others right behind Renegade on the board in Further Ado (5-1) and Commandment (6-1), and there are several horses closely behind that group.

The Puma (10-1) and Chief Wallabee (10-1) round out the top five thoroughbreds with the shortest horse racing odds.

So Happy and Potente are next in line to utilize in Kentucky Derby bets, with both colts at 15-1.

If looking for a longshot, you can find them with Intrepido or Right to Party, who are both priced at 50-1.

Before making any 2026 Kentucky Derby picks, be sure to see the horse racing predictions and futures bets from SportsLine's elite horse racing expert Jody Demling .

Top 2026 Kentucky Derby predictions, expert analysis
One of Demling's surprising 2026 Kentucky Derby picks: He doesn't have Commandment on top of the board.

In fact, there are several other horses he believes come out above the Brad Cox-trained challenger.

Since taking fourth in his debut last October, Commandment has won four straight races, including the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth over Chief Wallabee, and the Grade 1 Florida Derby over The Puma and Chief Wallabee.

However, both races came down to the wire as Commandment is not the horse that catches Demling's eye.

It certainly doesn't help that the horse drew the No.

6 post, which has the second-lowest win rate of any of the 20 post positions at Churchill Downs.

Demling also locked in his 2026 Kentucky Derby prediction for Renegade, who at 9-2 is trying to become the first favorite to win the Kentucky Derby since 2018.

It's been a mixed bag for Kentucky Derby favorites recently as this seven-year drought without a victory immediately followed a six-year run (2013-18) in which the favored horse won every year.

Renegade has won both of his starts as a 3-year-old, including the G1 Arkansas Derby in late March.

This comes after going winless as a juvenile across three races.

Renegade was sired by Into Mischief, who won his lone start on dirt at the 2007 CashCall Futurity but never attempted a race longer than 1 1/16 miles.

Saddled by Todd Pletcher, Renegade has the most experienced trainer in Kentucky Derby history.

Pletcher's had 65 starters at the Run for the Roses, which is 14 more than any other trainer.

Two of those horses have prevailed at Churchill Downs for Pletcher, but none of his last 13 Derby starters have finished in the money.

Demling has also locked in his 2026 Kentucky Derby picks for Further Ado (5-1), who won at Churchill Downs late in his 2-year-old season.

Following his fifth-place finish in his initial dirt-fast MSW race, he has not finished lower than third, that coming in August.

Since October, Further Ado has registered three wins and one second-place finish.

He is coming off a first-place finish at the 2026 Blue Grass at Keeneland earlier this month.

He had placed second behind The Puma, who enters the Derby at 10-1, at the March 7 Tampa Bay Derby.

Further Ado is trained by Brad H.

Cox, who has one Kentucky Derby winner in his career.

That came in 2021 when Mandaloun was elevated to the victory after Medina Spirit was disqualified for testing positive for a banned substance.
