**WARNING: Spoilers for Last One Laughing Series 2 are below**
As the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s Last One Laughing comes to an end, it’s no understatement to call it the funniest show on TV.
The concept might be simple – 10 comedians are put in a room for six hours and told not to laugh at each other’s best material – but the result has been nothing short of miraculous.
As sidesplittingly hilarious and joyous as it is to watch, it’s in equal parts fascinating to see the way these brilliantly weird and wacky comedians’ minds work in order to get a laugh.
Littered with genuinely shocking celebrity cameos, such as Richard Madeley’s this season which saw fans ‘lose it’, alongside an already star-studded cast, there really isn’t much that you can fault with.
But, following the show’s final episode, that was released today, and saw David Mitchell crowned champion, a glaring issue has become apparent to me which might not be so easy to fix.
Season two of the Amazon series has certainly not been without controversy.
After Romesh Ranganathan’s brutal exit in episode five, fans slammed his red card as ‘hugely unfair’, calling it a ‘dirty move’ by host Jimmy Carr.
Carr’s antics throughout this series have also started to anger large portions of viewers, including our own TV editor Sabrina Barr who said he was increasingly grinding her gears.
Because for all of Carr’s annoyances, and he can be very annoying, for me the greater problem lies in the way the finale is set up.
As Mitchell battled against Sam Campbell, Bob Mortimer and Mel Giedroyc in the final four, much of the hilarious spontaneity that was abundant in earlier episodes started to disappear.
At the start of both this and the first series, the possibilities seem endless with various Joker cards and pranks all lurking in the shadows, waiting to make somebody trip up.
But, as the series continues and the six hour timer starts to dwindle, the latter episodes can all start to feel rather awkward.
As host Carr, alongside his sidekick Roisin Conaty, continually reminds the contestants how much time is remaining, it places an unnecessary pressure on the comedians to suddenly laugh before the challenge is up.
With each passing red card that sees the cast start to dwindle, the energy of the show naturally starts to ramp down – just when other shows find the tension increasing.
Because of that, the final conclusion can feels so flat, almost as if the competitive aspect that makes the show so exciting at the beginning becomes its own worst enemy.
Mortimer in particular, who was able to make former Bake Off host Giedroyc crack with an impression of a ‘randy dolphin’, almost appears as though he his happy to throw away his laugh towards the end having already won season one.
He was the breakout star of last year, but if he was going to stick around, he shouldn’t be lacking a competitive edge.
Similarly, with neither Mitchell or Campbell showing no sign of giggling, what should have been a thrilling conclusion turned into an anti-climactic countback winner based on who caused more people to break.
Given my adoration for this series, I’m hesitant to suggest a change that could ruin its magic.
But in terms of how the latter episodes work as a viewing spectacle, something is just not quite right.
A possible solution to this scenario could be to scrap the countdown element altogether or, as some fans have suggested, enforce stricter penalties for playing too defensively or walking away from a joke.
Alternatively, like Celebrity Traitors which features a money reward at the end for the celebrity’s chosen charity, Last One Laughing’s finale could prove more entertaining with a prize.
Either way, it’ll still be a hilarious show – but one with a flaw that could eventually prove fatal.
The final episode of Last One Laughing is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
