A Married at First Sight groom has stormed off camera after being called out for making ‘homophobic’ comments.
This season of the Australian version of the show has seen another batch of couples matched by the experts – with mixed results.
While some have hit it off, several others are already going through rocky patches since walking down the aisle sight unseen – including Stephanie and Tyson.
The 32-year-old real estate agent was matched with the 30-year-old property investor, but the two have butted heads several times.
During the most recent episode of the long-running reality series, the couples all linked up for the latest commitment ceremony – which sees them decide whether to stay married or leave the experiment for good.
In the lead-up, Tyson had expressed his dissatisfaction being paired with Stephanie as he’d wanted a more ‘submissive’ partner.
When the pair sat down to talk out their issues, she then called out comments he’d made about homosexuality after being shown his audition tape earlier in the week.
As she explained: ‘Something that came from Tyson’s video interview was “I’m happy for you guys, be whoever you want to be but you know, you just keep it behind closed doors”.’
Jumping in to defend himself, Tyson declared he was ‘not against gay people’.
He went on to say: ‘I just feel like that whole topic can be pushed on us and just for me, I come from a traditional family and I’m not really comfortable with it.
I’m just being brutally honest.’
His declaration clearly didn’t sit well with gay couple Sammy and Chris – who condemned what he’d said.
‘It is hurtful to our community to hear that, it’s like us telling straight people to go do it behind closed doors, it’s not right,’ Chris told him.
Meanwhile Sammy also told Tyson: ‘I don’t think you’ve got much empathy, and you can’t say go do it behind closed doors – it just doesn’t make me feel like a person.’
‘The comment suppresses people and therefore we feel we need to stand up and create awareness and until that stops happening, there will be pride and all these things will still happen because we’re being suppressed and you’re an example that it still exists out there.”
Acknowledging the impact of what he’d said, Tyson then responded by saying: ‘Maybe it came out wrong, I didn’t mean it to.
‘I don’t mean to come here and offend people, but I am very black and white with my approach to communication.’
However, he added: ‘I’ve got to be honest with what I believe in.’
Challenging her husband, Stephanie then addressed her issues about him wanting her to be ‘submissive’.
‘He wants a wife to sit down, look pretty, speak when spoken to, don’t have an opinion unless you’re asked,’ she said.
However, Tyson claimed her comments were actually ‘untrue’ and he had a ‘lot of respect for women’.
‘She’s making out that I hate women and that’s such a disgusting thing to say.
I feel like she’s trying to put words in my mouth and trying to make me look like this bad person when I’m actually not,’ he hit back.
‘She’s making out I hate gay people, I’ve got gay friends and I like women as well.
I’m not a bad guy and she is portraying me as a bad guy.’
‘Quite frankly I don’t see a future with this girl and I’m going back to the Gold Coast, I’m done with this.
I’m done with this bickering, I’m done with this bulls***.’
He then added: ‘I’m done with Steph, she’s not a traditional wife in my eyes.
She’s a go-getter, which is great, but I don’t like her attitude towards me.
I don’t see a future there.’
After some back and forth between the couple, Tyson then jumped up and stormed off set while removing his microphone, before she burst into tears and took off her wedding ring.
A former soldier, Tyson is a devout Christian who describes himself as a ‘provider and protector who likes to take charge in relationships’.
Ahead of the show airing it was also teased of Tyson that he was ‘known for his directness and strong opinions, Tyson is regimented, conservative, and unafraid to stand by his beliefs, even when they’re polarising’.
Things between him and Stephanie also got off to a less-than-ideal start after he declared on their wedding day that she gave off ‘woke vibes’.
Although she had requested to be matched with someone with conservative beliefs like her, Steph and Tyson clashed when they had a discussion about ‘body counts’.
‘I was in somewhat of a relationship [with a] beautiful girl.
But unfortunately, she told me her body count history, like how many guys she’d slept with, and I think it was 78 or something crazy.
That’s too many for me.
That’s a lot of tallywhackers for me, quite frankly,’ he said.
Tyson then went on to say his ideal body count for his partner would be ‘zero’.
This is despite him believing men can have higher numbers because they ‘can’t control their urges’.
In another scene, he also discussed his stance on same-sex relationships and said: ‘That doesn’t bother me too much.
What bothers me [is] if it gets pushed in my face.
I don’t like when gay guys come up to me.
I’m not gay.
That’s on you guys.
Whatever you do behind closed doors.’
Taking aim at his wife at one point, he also said she gave off ‘masculine energy’ after she challenged some of his views.
Married at First Sight is streaming on Channel 4.
