More light has been shed on Helena Bonham Carter’s sudden departure from the forthcoming season of The White Lotus.

The acclaimed British actor, 59, best known for playing the eccentric and evil Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film series, was cast as a washed-out star chasing a comeback in Mike White’s eat-the-rich drama.

However, a week into filming the fourth season, HBO announced Bonham Carter’s exit, saying “it had become apparent” that the character written for her “did not align once on set.” The role was rewritten with Jurassic Park star Laura Dern cast in Bonham Carter’s place.

Variety now reports that the issue stemmed from “White’s demand for a boisterous performance.”
Bonham Carter’s representative declined The Independent ’s request for comment.

Dern, who previously worked with White to co-create the HBO show Enlightened , will reportedly play a character being developed to fill a similar place within the ensemble.

The Big Little Lies actor joins an ensemble including Steve Coogan, Rosie Perez, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, Vincent Cassel and Chloe Bennet, as well as Sandra Bernhard, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Ben Schnetzer and Laura Smet.

Production on the forthcoming season of the hit anthology series kicked off April 15 on the French Riviera, with the series following a new group of wealthy hotel guests during the Cannes Film Festival.

Filming is also taking place in Cannes , St.

Tropez, Monaco and Paris, while the five-star hotel Airelles Château de la Messardière transforms into the White Lotus du Cap.

Bonham Carter’s departure is certainly not the only behind-the-scenes drama The White Lotus has faced.

“By nature of the show’s premise — which required its stars to live together for months on end in an exotic locale — there were always rumors of behind-the-scenes hook-ups and occasional conflict.

Just like a group holiday gone wrong,” The Independent ’s Adam White wrote last week.

Listing some of the show’s most noteworthy on-and off-set drama — including season two stars Leo Woodall and Meghann Fahy meeting and falling in love, as well as tabloid rumors of a feud between season one stars Murray Bartlett and Jake Lacy (which both have denied) — White argued that “losing an actor like Helena Bonham Carter, who is so richly capable of the kind of cutting camp that The White Lotus best traffics in, is a bit of a blow.”
Several actors have highlighted the intensity of the filming experience on the series.

Jason Isaacs, who earned an Emmy nomination for his standout performance in season three, previously described the filming environment as “a cross between summer camp and Lord of the Flies but in a gilded cage” and claimed that friendships were “made and lost.”
Meanwhile, Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins were rumored to be feuding after starring together as the show’s central couple in season three.

Both avoided addressing the rift speculation for quite some time before eventually dismissing it in a joint interview with Variety last July.
