Tottenham are pushing to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach.

Spurs are locked in talks with De Zerbi and the Italian is expected to make a decision today on whether to accept a long-term contract to take over straight away.

De Zerbi had insisted he does not want to start a new role until the end of the season but Spurs are said to have offered him a significant financial package which would make him one of the highest paid managers in the Premier League.

It is unclear if any deal would include a relegation release clause.

Spurs have identified De Zerbi as first choice to succeed Igor Tudor after his exit on Sunday and just 44 days in charge.

The club want to make a permanent appointment to give them the best chance of avoiding relegation.

Spurs are one point above the bottom three with seven games remaining, following a 13-game winless run.

De Zerbi has been out of work since leaving Marseille in February.

The former Brighton boss wants to return to the Premier League and has also been linked with the Manchester United job.

Bruno Saltor will lead training for the players not currently away on international duty and Spurs want to appoint De Zerbi in the coming days, so he is in place for when the players return from international duty.

That would give him around 10 days to prepare for their next game away at Sunderland on April 12.

Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange have been tasked with appointing the new Spurs manager.

Former Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche is also said to have been considered on a short-term basis.
