‘It steals from my own imagination,’ says actor
Sharon Stone has revealed that she fast-forwards sex scenes in television shows now, as the “blatant” and “harsh” depictions take away the yearning and mystery for the viewer.
Stone, who has joined the third and forthcoming season of HBO’s hit show Euphoria , talked about her career and her time on the show in a new interview.
“I really think that all parents should see this show.
It really is what is happening in this world,” the Casino star said on CBS Mornings .
Set in the fictional town of East Highland, California, Euphoria premiered in 2019 to both critical acclaim and criticism over its risqué themes.
The first two seasons of Euphoria follow teenager Rue Bennett ( Zendaya ) navigating high school, as she is dealing with drug addiction and relapses.
Her classmates Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), Cassie Howard ( Sydney Sweeney ), Lexi Howard ( Maude Apatow ), Nate Jacobs ( Jacob Elordi ), and Maddie Perez (Alexa Demie) all deal with their own problems, varying from breakups to substance abuse and mental health.
Stone is joining the show as a “legendary” showrunner, with Apatow serving as her assistant.
However, when it came to modern television shows and their sex scenes, Stone didn’t sound too impressed.
Anchor Gayle King brought up Basic Instinct , the 1992 erotic thriller widely considered to be Stone’s breakout role , and the reaction to the much-talked about interrogation scene , which sees Stone’s Catherine Tramell uncrossing and crossing her legs in a room full of men.
“It was a third of a frame, it wasn’t even an entire frame of film,” Stone said.
“And, so, people were desperately trying to figure it out.
And I think that idea of, ‘Oh, my God.’ This hope, this wonder, this mystery, this intrigue, this yearning is something that is what all of our profound sexuality is based in.”
“So often now, when sex scenes come on TV, I fast-forward.
I don’t want to see it.
I don’t want to have to go through all of this blatant, harsh sexuality,” she said.
“For me, it steals from my own imagination.
And I prefer my yearning, mystery, desire.
I want to keep that alive inside myself.”
Basic Instinct starred Michael Douglas as a detective who becomes involved with the prime suspect of his murder investigation, played by Sharon Stone, and went on to become a box office hit.
Stone also discussed the backlash she received, and said she didn’t think she “wasn't protected and taken care of” and “punished for the behaviour of others”.
“My child was put on the stand in custody court and asked if his mother did sex movies,” Stone explained, referring to the 2004 custody case over her then-eight-year-old adopted son, Roan Bronstein .
In her 2021 memoir The Beauty of Living Twice , Stone revealed that she had no idea how exposed her genitals would be in the scene , and only found out once in a screening room.
Last year, reports said Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is writing the screenplay for a new “anti-woke” reboot .
“If it goes the way the one that I was in went, I would just say, I don't know why you'd do it,” Stone told Today in response , referring to the 2006 sequel which was received poorly both at the box office and by critics.
“I mean, go ahead, but good f***ing luck,” she added.
Made on a budget of $70m, Basic Instinct 2 ended up making only $38.6m worldwide.
