Youths clashed as cars were driven wildly towards small groups in south London.

The shocking disturbance happened near Beckenham Hill Station in the borough of Lewisham .

Dozens of youths were involved in the violence , mainly males.

Some young people watched on filming the mayhem on their mobile phones as cars reversed violently, spun their wheels or were driven dangerously.

A video shows youths attacking cars, with at least one window smashed when a vehicle appears to get trapped, possibly to avoid running over someone.

Police were called shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, following reports of disorder on Beckenham Place Park.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We recognise the concern this has caused for local residents and officers are working at pace to identify and locate those seen in the videos.

“Local people can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.

“We’d encourage anyone with information to get in touch with us so we can pursue every possible line of enquiry.”
Projectiles were thrown during the incident in Beckenham Hill Road, close to Beckenham Place Park.

The cause of the disturbance, or whether it was triggered through social media, was not clear.

Lewisham East Labour MP Janet Daby told the Standard: “The disorder reported on Wednesday night near Beckenham Place Park is completely unacceptable and has no place in our community.

“I remain in contact with the Metropolitan Police and the London Borough of Lewisham.”
Former Children and Families Minister Ms Daby stressed: “If anyone involved in this incident feels they have been a victim of a crime, I would encourage them to contact the police at 101.”
She added: “The safety and wellbeing of my community remains my highest priority, and I will continue to work with all relevant authorities.”
Reacting to the video, people told of their dismay about how the local area had changed.

“Beckenham used to be a lovely place to live.

Not anymore,” author Mike Pannett said on X.

On a similar note, another person posted: “Beckenham in south London used to be a really good area.

Not anymore.

“This video tells you everything you need to know.”
Lewisham Council declined to comment.

The incident came just days after Sir Sadiq Khan issued a warning that any repeat of the “utterly unacceptable” scenes of unrest in another part of south London would face the “full force of the law.”
Following chaotic scenes in Clapham over several days, the London Mayor stressed that anyone planning further mayhem over the Easter weekend would be “identified, held responsible and punished accordingly.”
He issued the warning after hundreds of young people descended upon Clapham High Street and Clapham Common on one day.

Around 100 police officers responded to reports of youths attempting to access shops and restaurants, as well as lighting fires and setting off fireworks.

As more and more stores are being targeted by shoplifters, calls are growing for their security staff to be equipped with truncheons and pepper spray .

Lord Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland and the Government’s Cost of Living Champion, backed the move.

He said: “We call it shoplifting, which sounds like a cheeky bit of pilfering, but actually we should just call it out for what it is, which is violent crime.

“We all saw the footage of marauding gangs and security guards being beaten up.

The violent nature of it in Clapham is horrific.

“I’ve always argued for more powers for security guards.

You go to Spain and all the security guards have pepper spray and a truncheon, they don’t mess about.”
M&S retail director Thinus Keeve has urged politicians to do more to tackle shoplifting , arguing it is becoming “more brazen, more organised and more aggressive” in stores each day.

Less than one in five shoplifting offences in England and Wales led to a court summons last year, according to government statistics, which also show the Met Police logged the fewest number of charges (7.3 per cent) last year.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said: “Strong progress has been made in tackling repeat retail crime offenders since the introduction of the Retail Crime Action Plan and Operation Pegasus in 2024.

“Policing and industry partners are now working more closely than ever, with improved intelligence‑sharing and more effective targeting of prolific shoplifters and organised retail crime groups.”
