If there’s one item at Pret that people love above all else, it’s the Jambon Beurre.
The simple French sandwich features just ham, cornichons and butter inside a stonebaked roll, and it’s a lunchtime staple for office workers across the capital.
Online its been hailed as a ‘life-changing’ sandwich, ‘the best’, and a ‘masterpiece’, but if the £4 sarnie is your go-to, we’ve got some bad news…
It’s disappeared from many of the chain’s shelves.
Unsurprisingly, Jambon Beurre lovers are pretty perturbed, while some could care less, branding the situation ‘the most middle-class problem in the known universe’.
Where have Pret’s Jambon Beurre sandwiches gone?
Before you panic, the popular product hasn’t been axed from Pret A Manger stores across the UK for good.
It’s merely temporarily missing, due to a shortage of one of the key ingredients.
A spokesperson for Pret confirmed: ‘Customers may have noticed that our Jambon Beurre is currently missing from shelves.
This is due to a temporary shortage of cornichons.
‘We’re sorry for any disappointment caused and are working hard to get this Pret favourite back in shops as soon as possible.’
No specific time frame has been given for its return to shops; however, Pret did add that Jambon Beurre is still available in ‘a couple’ of locations.
Which exact ones, we cannot say for sure, though.
Cornichon chaos
It’s not just Pret, though; many other food businesses using pickles could be impacted by supply issues, and some are already trying to get ahead of the problem.

Max Halley, who owns Max’s Sandwich Shop in Finsbury Park, told The Guardian he would be placing a ‘huge order’ with his cornichon supplier, ‘just in case’.
And if this weren’t enough, there’s also a risk of cornichon price hikes in the future, due to increased fertiliser and energy costs, as a result of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Big retailers are said to be keeping an eye on things, but reportedly, most haven’t experienced problems just yet.
Major supermarkets like Tesco, M&S, Aldi, Lidl, and Sainsbury’s across the UK all still have cornichons in stock.
So, if you’re really missing out on your Jambon Beurre fix and can’t be bothered to go on a wild goose chase to hunt one down, you could whip one up for yourself quite easily.

In other food news, a beloved British condiment is being discontinued after 200 years.
Gentleman’s Relish is a savoury paste, invented in 1828 by John Osborn, described as a ‘quintessential English delicacy’.
It’s also known as Patum Peperium, which is a mock-Latin phrase supposed to mean ‘pepper paté’.
Made using anchovies, butter, herbs and spices, the product has remained a cult favourite for centuries, with fans spreading it on toast or adding a spoonful to recipes like cottage pie for a salty, slightly fishy flavour.
However, despite a devoted following, it seems this iconic British speciality has struggled to maintain mass appeal in modern times.
AB World Foods, which has manufactured the spread for the past two decades, recently confirmed it had been axed earlier this year.
