Spencer Matthews has admitted his wife Vogue Williams ‘would have left him’ if his drinking had got worse.

The former Made in Chelsea star, 37, met his TV presenter wife, 37, in 2017 when both competing on the reality series The Jump.

They got engaged and married the following year and have since welcomed three children together – Theodore, seven, Gigi, five, and Otto, three.

However, over the years Spencer has spoken about how his boozy lifestyle previously put a strain on their relationship and nearly caused its demise.

He’s now also detailed how there used to be a ‘divide in their relationship’ that developed when he continued drinking when Vogue got pregnant with their first child.

‘She never sat me down and gave me some kind of ultimatum or anything like that.

But I could feel it.

I could feel that she was a bit disappointed in me.

‘And yes, I think the light was shone on my boozing when she fell pregnant with our firstborn, Theodore.

He made a big difference, I think, to our relationship, obviously, because I think what felt like joint fun became solo fun quite quickly because, obviously, she stopped drinking completely.’
He continued: ‘And I just didn’t, I carried on, and it created this kind of divide in the relationship, but also made me realise, you know, maybe my drinking habits are not normal.’
After Vogue started noticing how often he was drinking alone, she questioned him.

‘To begin with, I would say, like, “Darling, we’re watching a film, like, of course it’s, like, normal to have a few glasses of red wine”,’ he recalled.

‘And you kind of eventually, you just begin to think, why am I drinking on my own?

And you begin to question stuff, perhaps for the first time.’
Addressing his drinking, Spencer went on to say he doesn’t consider himself as an alcoholic as he can now drink in moderation.

However, he said in the past that ‘having one glass would have turned into ten and then I’d be out all night’.

Speaking about his current relationship with alcohol, he explained: ‘I’m sober most of the time, now.

I’ve gone from problem-drinking on a daily basis to having a drink if I feel like it very irregularly.

I no longer see it as a problem.

I have great balance in my life.’
In the past Spencer has spoken about how previously working as a trader exacerbated his drinking, saying that: ‘I always had jobs where being able to handle your drink really well was a huge bonus.’
Speaking on her Vogue’s Taboo Talk podcast, he added: ‘I was a trader at ICAP, and we would drink five to 10 pints every single day and then take clients out at night and if you couldn’t do that, you wouldn’t get the job, basically.’
But after ‘getting hammered’ after drinking alone one night, he had a ‘moment of clarity’ and decided to address his level of drinking.

‘It’s not like I just fancied giving up drinking.

I could have lost you, I could have lost work, I could have died – not to be overly dramatic about it, but that’s the way it was heading,’ he said.

Last year Vogue also commented on their relationship – blasting rumours they were heading for divorce.

‘It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up!’ she posted on Instagram.

‘I usually avoid addressing baseless and cruel rumours, but this just keeps coming up.

It’s disappointing to see this narrative being pushed almost daily when it’s absolutely not true, and much more importantly, I don’t want my children hearing these lies in the playground.

‘I’m not sure what the angle is or where it’s coming from, but the whole thing feels very strange and mean.

We’re very happily married and in love and I hope posting the truth on my own platform might make it stop.’
