Just a few years ago, it seemed most blockbuster films were sent straight to streaming and bypassed traditional cinematic releases.
Although the pandemic played a large part in this, Netflix became known for dropping huge films directly into the living rooms of its subscribers.
Most notable was the 2020 action thriller Extraction, which starred Chris Hemsworth as an Australian mercenary tasked with rescuing an Indian drug lord’s kidnapped son in Bangladesh, only for the mission to spiral when he is double-crossed.
Despite mixed critical reviews, the film proved a huge success, becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched originals with more than 99 million viewers in its first four weeks and later spawning a sequel.
Now the 42-year-old actor is back with another major action-led project, Crime 101, which has landed on Amazon Prime Video.
Just as notable as the film itself is what it represents: a shift in how big-budget films are being made, released, and positioned in the modern industry.
What is Crime 101 about?
Set in Los Angeles, Crime 101 takes a more grounded approach to the crime thriller genre, focusing on tension, character, and realism.
It centers on ameticulous and hard-to-track thief, played by Chris Hemsworth, who has been carrying out a string of carefully orchestrated robberies linked to the 101 freeway, leaving investigators struggling to pin him down.
With one final, career-defining score in mind, he begins to map out an ambitious heist that could allow him to walk away for good.
But his plans take an unexpected turn when he becomes entangled with an insurance broker, played by Halle Berry, who is dealing with her own uncertainty and sees an opportunity in the chaos.
As their fates become increasingly intertwined, a persistent detective, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, edges closer to uncovering the truth behind the crimes.

How was it received?
Early audience reactions on Rotten Tomatoes suggest the film has struck a chord with viewers.
One user wrote: ‘Love the movie.
All the actors were absolutely wonderful.
Good storyline and I like the fact that it let you know everybody deserve a second chance.
Beautiful movie.’
Another praised its realism, saying: ‘Watching Crime 101 felt less like fiction and more like something that could realistically happen… Instead of relying on spectacle, Crime 101 succeeds by feeling real, and that’s what makes it memorable.’
A further review added: ‘A crime thriller that is more emotional than it is violent… The cinematography makes you feel like you’re part of the actual film.’
While critical consensus is still forming, audience feedback points to a film that favours mood, realism and character over high-octane excess.
A new direction for Amazon MGM Studios
The release of Crime 101 also reflects a broader strategic shift from Amazon MGM Studios.
After years of streaming-first releases dominating the landscape, there is a growing push to return to theatrical windows before films arrive online, combining cinematic scale with streaming accessibility.
At the same time, there is a renewed focus on star-led projects in the mould of traditional Hollywood blockbusters, positioning actors like Chris Hemsworth at the centre of major releases.
Upcoming projects, including Project Hail Mary, Masters of the Universe, How to Rob a Bank and a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, suggest a clear ambition to compete directly within the blockbuster space.
In that context, Crime 101 signals studio intent on blending classic movie stardom with a modern distribution model, and audiences appear to be responding.
Crime 101 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
