I’ve worked in journalism and social media for over a decade, and technology has vastly changed over this period.

Once upon a time, I would attend red carpets and events with a full camera crew who would shoot content on a DSLR camera, armed with big lights, heavy TV microphones, spare batteries and stacks of memory cards.

Now, it’s a very different reality.

Content creation today is far more of a solo operation.

It’s built around smartphones with razor-sharp cameras and compact lightweight gear.

You no longer need a full production team or broadcast equipment, and you don’t need to be a trained audio engineer or a cinematographer to create high-quality content.

Simply set up, point and shoot.

What you do need, however, is the right set of tools.

Modern content creation is all about ease and efficiency.

Whether you’re filming interviews, shooting social-first video, recording podcasts, or capturing candid moments, your kit needs to support your environment, and it needs to be reliable.

There is no shortage of gadgets on the market.

Most high streets are now littered with cheap tripods, ring lights and mini mics, but not all of them are built to deliver professional results.

Many of the cheaper tools fall short when it comes to using them out in the wild.

The key areas to focus on are sound, lighting, setup and connectivity.

Take audio, for example.

You’ve seen those £20 mini microphones all over your feeds, but they rarely hold up in louder environments and often lack essential features like adjustable gain or built-in compression.

Investing a little more in a trusted audio brand can make a significant difference, giving you cleaner, more consistent sound, especially in louder environments.

The good news is that building a solid content creation setup doesn’t have to be overcomplicated or too expensive.

With the right choices, a compact kit can replace heavy equipment.

From wireless microphones to sturdy tripods, these are the items I consider the most essential for producing high-quality social media content.

This is one of the most compact high-quality drones on the market.

If you’re someone who needs to capture steady overhead shots of scenery or crowds, the Neo 2 is perfect for easy flying and filming.

You don’t need to be an expert drone operator to fly this device, as it comes with built-in omnidirectional obstacle sensing and gesture control settings to help you track subjects.

To launch the drone, you simply have to place it in your palm and click the takeoff button for an easy takeoff.

The device has a ‘return to palm’ feature, which allows the drone to locate your hand and safely land for ease.

You can operate the drone with hand gestures, or via remote control.

Think of this camera as your all-in-one device for content creation.

The SJCAM C400 is a nimble 4k camera that shoots super crisp content with the help of electronic stabilisation.

It’s essentially a built-in gimbal-style handle, which helps to keep footage smooth without any shaky shots.

This is the perfect camera for vlogging on the move, red carpets, or even shooting street style.

It can be mounted on a tripod, held in one hand or worn on the body for first-person point of view shots.

The small screen can be rotated to whichever angle you want to shoot in, and you can fully control all of its features hands-free via an app.

Look no further if you’re someone who self-shoots frequently.

It also has a 7-hour battery life, so it’ll last most of the day.

Are you someone who needs to post reels or longer videos to YouTube soon after shooting?

If so, this gadget ensures you have strong internet connectivity to allow you to post your content from wherever you are.

This is great for digital nomads who work from remote settings like the beach or mountains, or even those looking to shoot and post whilst located in weaker areas of signal.

Gone are the days when you have to find a local coffee shop or rely on dodgy wifi to upload your content.

All you have to do is activate a nano SIM card with a relevant data plan, and you’ll have access to high-performance 5G internet.

The Nighthawk M3 model has a 13-hour battery and can support up to 32 devices.

There are also more heavy-duty models available, but this one is perfect for packing on the go.

Looking for a reliable wireless microphone that’s compact, discreet and easy to clip onto clothing or a microphone stic?

Then DJI’s Mic Mini comes up roses.

DJI is famed for its wireless mics, offering a more affordable option to the popular Rode Wireless GO model.

DJI offers a more industrial wireless mic model for more advanced setups.

This is ideal if you’re looking for crisp sound quality that can be adjusted while you shoot.

The microphones simply connect to your phone using a receiver which plugs directly into your smartphone.

You can purchase a lightning or USB-C adapter for this, and you’ll be connected instantly.

The mini mics pack neatly into a sturdy flip case, which is slightly bigger than a Bluetooth earphone case.

This phone tripod stretches to 70 inches and folds down easily into a slim case.

To lengthen it, all you have to do is unclip the legs to extend the lightweight aluminium poles.

At full extension, the tripod is sturdy and secured to the ground with non-slip silicone grips.

This is an easy option for content creators as it comes with a phone holder and camera screw mount for GoPros and other smaller cameras.

What sets this tripod aside is that it doubles it up as a selfie stick.

It comes with a Bluetooth feature, which means you can shoot hands-free and control when to record with the Bluetooth remote.

Studio Creator Podcast and Vlogging Kit
For newbies, Studio Creator offers a great entry-level kit as it gives you a bit of everything in one go without making too much of a financial sacrifice.

The Studio Creator Podcast & Vlogging Kit bundles a mic, light and tripod together, so you can instantly shoot content from the comfort of your house.

This setup is ideal for beauty videos, face-to-camera content and basic indoor shots.

This is a great starter kit if you’re new to making content and are looking to upgrade from shooting with just your phone.

NEBO Rambler PS100 Portable Power Station
If you’re shooting content all day and you don’t have time to stop and recharge, a regular power bank won’t cut it.

The NEBO Rambler PS100 isn’t your standard battery pack.

It’s more like a portable power station.

It has enough capacity to charge your phone, camera and your laptop.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about packing individual wires.

It comes with multiple ports, including USB-C and wireless charging.

By no means is this a light and compact product, but if you’re out shooting content for multiple hours, this is the answer to recharging with ease.

This is the ideal option if you’re shooting outdoors and don’t have access to power points.

This wearable camera is ideal if you like shooting point-of-view style content.

Whether you’re heading down the slopes or filming a skate trick, once you clip the Osmo Nano onto your jacket or hat, you’ll be able to watch the moment back as if it were filmed through your own eyes.

The camera has an impressive wide-angle setting, which allows more of your surroundings to be captured in the shot.

It also has built-in filters, meaning you won’t have to spend much time editing, as you can shoot in your favourite colour setting from the get-go.
