The Devil Wears Prada 2 hailed as ‘phenomenal’ after fans feared it would crash and burn

It’s time for fans of The Devil Wears Prada to gird their loins after the first reviews of the highly anticipated sequel started dropping.

After a 20-year wait for the follow-up, the new film sees Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs return to Runway magazine, where she reunites with her former boss Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep.

It’s also been teased that the follow-up will see the infamously frosty Miranda navigating her career ‘amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing’.

She will also face off against her former assistant Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), who after famously missing out on Paris Fashion Week and being hit by a car is now a ‘high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Miranda desperately needs’.

Ahead of its release, fans declared that having the sequel drop after two decades was ‘iconic’, while others said a follow-up was completely necessary, even after such a long time.

Although The Devil Wears Prada 2 won’t be released in UK cinemas until May 1, early critic reviews have indicated fans won’t be disappointed.

‘Every journalist who sees it will cringe from recognition,’ he added.

‘Aline Brosh McKenna’s script is sharp and witty.

We’ll be quoting this for years to come.

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt are still great.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 also sees Stanley Tucci return as Nigel Kipling, Runway’s fashion director.

It also features Justin Theroux as Emily’s boyfriend Benji, and Kenneth Branagh as Miranda’s new husband Stuart.

Meanwhile Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley plays Miranda’s current first assistance Amari Mari, while Colin from Accounts’ Patrick Brammall plays Peter – Andy’s love interest.

The sequel will also include cameos from Donatella Versace, Lady Gaga, Ciara and Ashley Graham.

However one character who will be noticeably missing is Nate – Andy’s former boyfriend Nate, who has come under fire from fans of the movie over his treatment of her.

But in a recent interview with People, the actor declared that he had to ‘stand for my character’.

‘I’ve re-watched that film a bunch of times, and it feels like they were both just working really hard to make it in their careers,’ he pointed out.

While Nate and Andy break up after her success at Runway starts to transform her life and priorities, with her partner calling into question her ‘integrity’, Adrian argued that whether his reaction was warranted comes down to ‘if you care about birthdays’ – as Andy missed Nate’s.

‘I don’t look to a birthday as a big, meaningful thing, but agreements, I do.

If someone makes a commitment, I do take it seriously that the commitment gets upheld.

So, it’s not so much about the birthday per se.

Speaking to the same publication, Anne also recently said that it was ‘beautiful’ and ‘joyful’ to step into Andy’s shoes again.

‘Sometimes you’re like, “I wish I could go back to that moment knowing what I know now”,’ she said.

‘So for me, this was the chance to actually be with the same people again, step back into that world, but with a little bit more perspective.’
Reflecting on the beloved 2006 film, Anne said that although she was ‘stressed and anxious’ making it, she now looks at it as ‘one of the most hilarious experiences ever because of the people I was with’.

‘Emily Blunt is such a dream of a human being.

Stanley [Tucci] is so funny and quick, and Meryl [Streep], I don’t talk about how much I revere her to her, but I do.’
She went on to call Meryl someone she ‘admires’ and how is ‘just living greatness’ and was ‘always pushing herself to expand as an artist’.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in cinemas on May 1.
