ITV schedule shake-ups have once again seen Coronation Street and Emmerdale taken off air this evening, much to the disappointment of soap fans.
Tonight’s soap power hour has been swapped out for live international football coverage, as England takes on Japan at Wembley Stadium.
With coverage starting from 7pm on ITV1, the friendly game kicks off at 7.45pm.
Thankfully, soap fans won’t be missing out too much, as both Emmerdale and Corrie return to their normal slots tomorrow (Wednesday, April 1) at 8pm and 8.30pm respectively.
There will also be additional instalments airing on Sunday, April 5 from 7pm to make up for tonight’s cancellation.
This isn’t the first time the soaps have been impacted by sports, with episodes being shifted just last week.
There have been numerous disruptions to the soap schedules since ITV made a major change at the beginning of this year, cutting down episode output for both soaps in line with research on audience viewing habits.
The shake-up was kicked off by a special crossover episode which saw characters from both Corrie and Emmerdale come together for the first time.
Metro readers have previously expressed their frustration at the disruptions, arguing that sports have their own channels and should be shown there, while others pointed out that it always seems to be the soaps that are sacrificed.
Some suggested that there should be a special soaps channel to avoid this issue entirely, while others admitted that they didn’t mind the changes as long as they still got the same amount of episodes each week.
Though we won’t be taking a trip to the Dales or the cobbles tonight, there is still plenty more drama to come this week.
In Emmerdale, tensions between the Dingles and Tates remain high following Kim’s (Claire King) poisoning and the great cow heist.
