Austin Abrams is fighting for survival, running for his life on a dark snowy night, in a sneak peek at the latest film adaptation of Resident Evil.

The American actor, 29, stars in the upcoming horror film based on the hit 1994 video game series, which sees players try to survive in environments inhabited by zombies and other mutated creatures.

Resident Evil, directed and co-written by Weapons’ Zach Cregger, will tell an original story unrelated to the long-running franchise, with Abrams starring as medical courier Bryan, who finds himself trying to survive after his night descends into chaos.

In a trailer for the film, released by Sony Pictures Releasing UK on Thursday, Bryan is seen knocking on the door of a seemingly abandoned house as he asks to use their phone.

Tense music accompanies the preview, which later sees Bryan running away from an unknown figure, before loading a gun as he prepares to fight for his survival.

During Bryan’s phone call, he says: “I’m really sorry that we got disconnected earlier, but some things have happened.

I’m in, like, a seriously messed-up situation right now.

And it looks like there’s a chance that we might not get to talk to each other again.”
Meanwhile, he is seen witnessing a figure be dragged away, before jumping down a manhole cover as he fights for his life – with otherworldly sounds and screams heard as he later runs away from scenes of blood, destruction and fire.

The popular zombie film franchise has seen many previous adaptations and its first film instalment, Resident Evil (2002), was followed by seven live-action movies led by Milla Jovovich .

It featured stars such as Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez and Ruby Rose , and concluded with The Final Chapter in 2016, which depicted the aftermath of the apocalypse.

In 2021, the franchise received a reboot with Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City (2021), starring Victorious’s Avan Jogia and Skins star Kaya Scodelario.

The survival series also includes animated films, novels and comics, and is among the highest-grossing horror zombie franchises in gaming.

The latest Resident Evil film is set to be released in cinemas on September 18.
