Coronation Street’s Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin), as all soap teens must, has been through a lot.
There was the death of her mum, Becky Swain (Amy Cudden), a copper who died in the line of duty after suffering a vicious hit and run.
She blackmailed future step-mum, Carla Connor (Alison King) and later found herself deeply entangled with the soap’s psycho du jour, Joel Deering (Calum Lill).
Then came her burgeoning relationship with reform-in-process, Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan), who was later stabbed to death; her shooting at the hands of her own mum, Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers), during a showdown with escaped killer Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis), and the return of her actually-not-dead mum, Becky.
That last one was pretty short lived, as it became apparent that Becky was, for all intents and purposes, a nutter, who found herself facing a lengthy stretch in the clink, following a campaign of GBH, firebombing and attempted murder.
Oh, and she found a body last week, just after her mum’s wedding.
So, yeah…the poor girl hasn’t had any shielding from the drama that naturally comes with living in Weatherfield, and, according to Sydney, there’s plenty more to come for her alter-ego, as she enters a ‘coming of age’ storyline involving Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne).
Sydney speaks on her new story
Speaking to Inside Soap, Sydney said: ‘Dylan and Betsy have been through a lot together, there’s beautiful moments to come.
They’re polar opposites; she’s this ticking time bomb that could go off at any time, and he’s quite grounded and sweet.
‘That can create some quite funny scenes, because there’s that natural comedic element of them being so different, but also some beautiful ones.
I’m also excited for Liam to get his chance to shine.
Speaking on her joy at finally being given her own storyline after acting exclusively as a supporting player in other character’s plots, Sydney said: ‘It’s always been great to support my on-screen mums and family, now I get to pave my own way.
‘I’ve been working hard, so I’m really excited for people to see it.
It’s going to be a busy summer.’

Liam recently spoke on the plot to Inside Soap, promising: ‘It’s going to be quite a big 2026.
I’ve got a nice storyline to get my teeth stuck into, which is great.
‘It’ll be quite a lot of work with Sydney.
It’s very coming of age.
It’s a subject storyline, which is obviously Corrie‘s speciality – it’s one thing the show is amazing at.
So I’m very excited for that.’
He further elaborated on his desire to work with Sydney: ‘It would be nice.
Because of the off-screen friendship I have with Sydney.
It’d be really nice to get into it a little bit more.
And Dylan’s trying hard here, let’s be honest!
He’s a trier, bless him.’
Vicky Myers will be ‘massively’ involved
When asked about how involved her character will be in the storyline, Vicky said: ‘Massively!
Well, I’m saying massively because she is Betsy’s mother.
So if Betsy’s involved, I think it’s safe to say that Lisa will be somewhere looking over her shoulder!
‘But what’s to come is huge and I’m looking forward to getting started with it.
‘That is extremely powerful but I can’t say much about it.
It is going to be brilliant.
I’m really excited for both of them – both Liam and Sydney – because it’s something that is going to be challenging for them.
‘But they have the skills and talent to showcase it, so I’m excited – if that’s the right word!’
