The new God Of War spin-off doesn’t sound like it’ll be set in Egypt, but it will apparently feature cultures ranging from Ancient Maya to Japan.
It’s four years now since God Of War Ragnarök and that’s just about the time you would expect to start hearing about a new game.
Officially, there’s been nothing from Sony (except disappointing 2D game God Of War: Sons Of Sparta and the promise of a remake trilogy) but there has been an increasingly number of rumours about a spin-off being overseen by Ragnarök co-director Cory Barlog.
This spin-off, so it’s said, will have you playing as Faye, the (second) wife of Kratos who was briefly featured in Ragnarök.
Since she didn’t really do anything in that game, it’s been a difficult rumour to get excited about, even though the sources are very reliable.
However, new information this week paints a very different picture.
Apparently, not only will the game feature Kratos in some capacity but also Ragnarök character Týr, the Norse god of war.
That’s believable enough but apparently other mythologies will also be mixed into the game, to the point where you’ll be wielding a talking sword that is actually Merlin from Arthurian legend.
The rumours were collated by website MP1st and get even weirder than Merlin’s inclusion, since apparently your in-game companion will be a ‘gelatinous cube’, which sounds more like something out of Dungeons & Dragons.
Other cultures are apparently also set to be included, with Mayan, Chinese, and Japanese mythology specifically mentioned.
Curiously, there’s still nothing about Egypt, which has long been a fan favourite idea and the most obvious next direction for the series – but maybe they’re saving that for a mainline entry and not a spin-off.

It sounds like a lot of ideas to cram into one game, especially one that’s set before the events of the Norse trilogy, but with Barlog in charge you’ve got to give it the benefit of the doubt.
Less has been rumoured about how the game will play – especially as it’s not clear what abilities Faye, who is technically a giant, has – but the action has been compared to the fast-paced nature of Devil May Cry, which would certainly be a change from the Kratos games.
As to when the game will be announced, one rumour, from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, suggests it’ll be revealed this month.
A State of Play has been rumoured for April, and perhaps even this week, but the suggestion is that it’ll be ‘focused’ on third party games.
That may not preclude a quick teaser for a new God Of War but it does seem more likely the game would be announced during Sony’s traditional not-E3 showcase, in late May or early June.
However, it’s worth noting that the reveal for Ragnarök was little more than the logo and a release year (which it ended up missing), with no gameplay footage and only a very brief voiceover from Kratos; so be prepared for this spin-off getting similar treatment.
Although it remains unclear whether the rumours of a State of Play this week are true there is going to be a showcase on Thursday from Xbox, to debut 4A Games’ Metro 2039.
There’s also talk of a separate reveal for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced and maybe even the rumoured new Star Fox game.
Why everything is happen at the same time, just a couple of months before not-E3 season, is a mystery.
