The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated May 4.

It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.

Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards), Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) took to the stand in Emmerdale today, ready to face questioning after the murder of Ray Walters (Joe Absolom).
Back in January, Bear returned to the village after months working as a slave on Celia Daniels’ (Jaye Griffiths) farm.

When he entered Tenants, he found Ray trying to kill Paddy.

In his traumatised state, Bear grabbed Ray and squeezed his neck so hard, he died.

Paddy, Dylan and Bear attempted to cover up Ray’s murder, but DS Walsh’s (Amanda Ryan) determination to uncover the truth meant it wasn’t long until the trio cracked.

Bear is facing murder charges, while Paddy and Dylan have been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Everything changed for the three men a few days ago, when Bear found fellow slave Simo (Steven Gidwaney) in the prison visiting room.

After Paddy’s chat with Bear, he found Simo outside and asked if he’d be willing to testify at the trial.

Simo said no, pointing out that he’s got his life back on track now after the ordeal at the farm, and didn’t want to risk it unravelling.

But after some clever work from Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough), Simo changed his mind.

The trial in today’s instalment was incredibly intense.

Paddy, Dylan and April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) all took to the stand and reflected on everything they went through.

It was difficult, but everyone was putting forward more or less the same points.

No one was on the stand to say anything that fuelled the theory of Bear intentionally murdering Ray.

That was, until Simo got up and started speaking.

When the barrister started questioning Simo, it became clear that he believed Bear wasn’t a victim at all.

Throughout his time on the farm, Bear was groomed by Ray a lot more than Celia.

He liked Bear, and would often put things in place that meant he didn’t need to work as much as the other slaves.

Ray would also give Bear treats, and medication for his arm injury.

According to Simo – who faced Ray’s wrath fairly regularly on the farm – Bear definitely didn’t suffer.

Bear has outright refused to be questioned due to his vulnerable state, and that he gets angry when someone tries to twist the narrative, or fails to understand what he’s saying.

Not having Bear interrogated was a wise decision at the start, but no-one could’ve predicted the moves Simo played.

It was Paddy’s call – and he agreed.

Can Bear cope?
