Navigating your way around a European city’s transport network when you’ve not been there before isn’t always easy.

The manual doors, which remain on a few of Paris’ oldest Metro lines, are one panic-inducing example, for starters.

That’s if you’ve figured out how to buy a ticket in the first place (you won’t find tap-in options in Budapest or Rome).

Instead, you might want to pick a walkable city, enabling you to see the sights on foot.

Now, a new study has identified the most walkable cities in Europe in 2026 – and Edinburgh, labelled ‘stunning’ by its locals, has come out on top.

The names were ranked by the percentage of residents who labelled their city’s walkability factor as either ‘good ‘or ‘amazing’ – and Edinburgh received an impressive 93%.

While there’s a sprawling bus and tram network, allowing travellers to tap on with their bank card for ease, many of Edinburgh’s main tourist attractions are all within close, walkable proximity to one another.

The most obvious example is the Royal Mile, which is, naturally, a mile-long stretch running from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the Royal Family.

Along the route, there’s also St Giles’ Cathedral, as well as the Scottish Parliament.

Plus, not far away, there’s Arthur’s Seat, which serves as a decent, relatively heart-pumping hike with the reward of views out to the coast at the end, if you’ve got the stamina.

Elsewhere on the list, the oh-so-chic choice of Copenhagen came in second with a score of 90%, while fellow Scandi city Oslo was ranked third with a score of 89%.

Again, there was another win for the Nordics, as next came Sweden with 88%.

Also on the list were Paris, Helsinki, and Kraków.

Walkable cities are the talk of the town at the moment, as TimeOut’s list isn’t the only one in circulation.

GuruWalk has also released a 100-strong list of the world’s top cities for walking in 2026.

This study was a win for those in search of La Dolce Dita, as Rome came up trumps in first place, while Madrid was in second and Budapest third.

Things to do in Edinburgh

Ready to head out the door of your hotel and aimlessly explore?

There are museums and galleries galore, from the National Museum of Scotland – which houses everything from science to fashion under one roof – to Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, which is great fun for all ages.

To continue with the walking spirit, there are tonnes of free walking tours of the city to take advantage of, including ones organised by SANDEMANs Edinburgh, GuruWalk, Bobby’s Free Walking Tours, and Scotland City Tours.

Recommendations for a visit to Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Fringe Festival, which takes place in August each year.

Thousands of shows take place in hundreds of venues across the capital, from comedy to drama to circuses, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Despite the fact that accommodation and travel can be more expensive while the Festival is on, it’s an event to stick on your bucket list.
