The Government has thanked authorities in the United Arab Emirates for their cooperation with the garda investigation which resulted in the arrest of one of the leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group.

Daniel Kinahan was detained yesterday by police in Dubai after the High Court in Dublin issued a warrant for his arrest.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that he face trial here for alleged organised crime offences.

The 48-year-old remains in custody pending the outcome of extradition proceedings.

There has been a broad welcome in Government circles following his arrest by police in Dubai, which occurred during a search and surveillance operation within 48 hours of the arrival of an Irish arrest warrant.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said it shows the bilateral agreement on extradition between the two countries is working effectively and due process will take its course.

The UAE authorities have referred to Mr Kinahan as a fugitive allegedly involved in an international organised crime network who was arrested as part of a joint effort to combat cross-border crime.
