Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has confirmed work is underway on a new game, as rumours escalate around a follow-up to Injustice 2.

Like Street Fighter and Tekken, Mortal Kombat feels like a perennial franchise which will always be around, but it’s not in the healthiest shape following the last mainline entry.

Mortal Kombat 1 served as a reboot of the franchise, and while it went onto sell eight million copies overall, it was notably less successful than its predecessor Mortal Kombat 11, which managed to sell over 15 million copies worldwide after three years.

As you might expect however, based on those numbers, Mortal Kombat is still alive and kicking, and NetherRealm boss Ed Boon has confirmed work is underway on a new entry.

In an interview with Collider to promote the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, Boon was asked if he could provide any updates on what the studio is working on.

‘I wish I could tease something,’ Boon replied.

‘I think if I teased and gave it away, I’d probably get in trouble.

But we are actively pursuing… we’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more as well.

‘So there’s a lot of pots on the stove; not just with games though, with other forms of media and whatnot.

So we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.’
While a new Mortal Kombat game was inevitable, ‘doing more as well’ is perhaps a hint towards the long rumoured sequel to Injustice 2.

There’s already a stack of evidence that a third entry is in development – ranging from comments from voice actors to LinkedIn profiles from developers – but it still hasn’t yet been officially confirmed.

In fact, one leaker recently implied it might not be an Injustice game but a new DC fighter altogether.

In a post on X, MultiverSusie, a prominent leaker for MultiVersus, stated, ‘I think it’s time we move on from the Injustice branding maybe,’ in response to her prior tease about a new Injustice game.

Injustice 2 was released in 2017, so it’s been a hot minute since the last entry.

Most notably, DC’s leadership has changed significantly since then, so it would make some sense to create a new DC fighting game to compliment the studio’s current output.

The premise of Injustice, which centres around an evil version of Superman, also feels out of step with last year’s optimistic film reboot.

Multiple versions of characters can exist at once, but if it wants to capitalise on the success of 2025’s Superman, or even the upcoming Supergirl, a new Injustice might feel a bit antiquated in 2026.

Of course, there’s a chance we do get Injustice 3 based on all the prior leaks.

Either way, we might get an announcement soon, with Summer Game Fest around the corner on June 5.

Injustice aside, Boon also discussed what characters he’d like to see in Mortal Kombat in the future, where he mentioned Street Fighter.

‘I would love to see a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat,’ he added.

‘I think that would be cool.’
‘We’ve had Joker, who was a really dark character, but DC and Marvel, it would be a lot of fun to see those characters as well.’
